No matter how intent Saya was to find Ken’ichi and confront him, it did not make her brave. Far from it. As the day of her departure to a farm in Yamaguchi Prefecture approached, after which Saya would go to Hiroshima, where Ken’ichi was studying, she became more wound-up than a Jack-in-a-box. If Jun snuck in to use the toilet while Saya was in the shower, she would shriek, convinced that the shadow of her husband had come to take her away. Of course this was silly, but it didn’t stop the rampant paranoia coming between Saya and her girlfriend. Everything reminded her of Shimane, of Ken’ichi. Whenever she and Jun made love, Saya had to establish no penetration, no dirty talk, and lights on so she could see Jun’s form at all times.

Jun tried to be patient, especially when presented with only oral and humping, but she was always asking Saya if she was okay, if she was sure she wanted to do what she set out to do, and all of those empty questions that only served to make Saya feel worse.

Two days before Saya left, new duffel bag packed and ready to go, Jun approached her and asked her out on a date.

It was a quiet Sunday in late March, meaning the trees were beginning to flower, but it was still too cold for most people to be out enjoying them. Not for Jun, who wore a thin sweater and jeans while her girlfriend piled on three layers and still chattered her teeth. The moment they stepped into the park at the end of the street she wished she had brought her mittens. As if a mind reader, Jun took her hand into hers and shared her warmth.

Plums blossomed around them, attracting young couples with dogs, children on their way home from school, and the elderly. Saya felt that she and her girlfriend would attract too much negative attention, but the denizens of Nagoya never paid them any mind. It’s so different from Shimane. If Saya walked down the road holding Jun’s hand…

“I know it’s not the same as the countryside, but I thought maybe some nature would help ease your nerves.”

“It doesn’t change the fact that I have to do it.”

“Perhaps not.” Jun squeezed her hand. “But it’s better than staying cooped up in the apartment fretting.”

“I guess.”

Ducks swam in a pond a few meters away. Jun steered her girlfriend in that direction and pointed to the nearest one. “Did you know ducks mate for life?”

“I think I heard something about that.”

The nearest male duck flapped his wings against a female before quacking at her existence. Typical male. “One year during college, my ex-boyfriend and I used to sneak into a park in Sapporo. Back then, it was mostly a giant grove of trees that could hide any type of sordid act. They called it ‘Lover’s Lot.’”

Why is she telling me this?

“Beyond the trees was a pond like this one. A bunch of ducks lived there during the summer.
